Have you ever noticed that when you are in love you, become like the one you love? Have you ever experienced being a slave of your beloved?
There are two things that love does to us. First we become like the one we love. Second we become the slaves of our beloved.
Most of us adapt ourselves to our beloved. We somehow absorb qualities of our beloved into our own self. Notice couples who have been married for a long time, there is something strangely similar with both of them.
One tendency of love is to union. “And the two will become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one.” Mark 10:8.
Another tendency of love is to slave himself to her beloved. The lover wants to please her beloved at all cost and in turn becomes the beloved’s slave. We can see all the crazy things humans do just to prove and win the affection of their beloved. Even if that means that the lover has to stoop down.
Now here is the problem.
If we love something lower than us, like money, pleasure, fame and power, we become like them and are their slaves.
If you love money, then the tendency is for you to be “like” money. You spend all your time thinking and obsessing about money. You also exhaust all energy pursuing it. And the only topic that comes out your mouth is money. It would be nice if actual money comes out of your mouth.
Also, your love for money has made you a slave of an inanimate object. You just made money higher than you are since you are “working for money!” You have given up the dignity of your humanity to be a slave of a bill. And that is simply pathetic.
Now don’t get me wrong, I think money is not evil in itself. Money is a reality that we all need to survive whether we like it or not. But what is sinful is the “love of money”. “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” 1 Timothy 6:10.
Here is where our love of God lifts us up. If we love God, we become “like” Him. In short we become holy! We become a truly loving person. We become the person whom God designed us to be. Even to be God’s slave lifts up our dignity since we are serving a being higher than us, and not lower. It is really better to serve in heaven than reign in hell.
