How to Go Beyond Our Brokenness

By Daxx Bondoc

Have you ever seen a Japanese paper lamp? Have you noticed that even if the lamp has cracks and tears, once it is light, its brokenness disappears in the light? Somehow the light consumes the lamp’s brokenness. Once it is light, the only thing you see is this glowing lamp.

Most of us are broken by our faults and got broken by the faults of others. And many of us are stuck in our own brokenness. Our image of our self is a broken one and it affects the rest of our lives.

Is there still hope for us broken people?

Yes.

The name of this hope is Jesus, the Christ!

Jesus said “I am the light of the world.”  But He is also the light of each and one of us. Like the broken lamp, if we let Jesus in our hearts, He will light us up. His light will consume our brokenness. When we let Jesus light our being, people will start to see beyond our brokenness. They will see the light of Jesus shining in us. “It is no longer I that live, but Christ living in me” says St Paul.

And then we shall shine!

But unlike the lamp, our brokenness will not be hid from the light, but it will be healed by the Light. The lamp continues to be broken after the light is put off. But if we let Jesus in our lives He will heal our brokenness permanently.

So how does this all look like?

Look at the saints like Mother Teresa or John Paul II, how they glowed with the light of Christ. Or those people who are so in love with Jesus that every time you are with them you feel like you are in a peaceful and joyful space. To be around these people is to be in the presence of the light of Christ, the light of God.

So is there a way to go beyond our brokenness?

Yes.

Jesus.

So let Him dwell in your heart and you will start to shine.

And then, be a light to the world!
